California State Law & California Highway Patrol Require All Residents To Remove Their Studded Winter Tires by April 30.
With the bi-polar winter we just experienced here in Truckee-Tahoe, and potential snow in the forecast for this coming Monday, it would appear that winter is officially taking its victory lap before heading out. This means that it is officially time to start looking at swapping out your winter tires for a more road friendly, all-season tire.
Winter or snow tires are designed for prolonged winter conditions, including snow, ice, and slush. The tread compounds in winter tires stay softer and more flexible in cold weather, which improves traction, handling, and control when temperatures dip below ~45º F. Additionally, a winter tire that includes studs can add even more traction when driving on icy roads.
In the warmer days to come (when temperatures stay below ~45º F) you will want an all-season tire designed for a smooth, quiet ride compatible to most conditions.
TOP 5 ALL-SEASON TIRES FOR TRUCKEE
So what tires should I get? That’s a great question and to answer this we chatted with Kenny McMurray, owner of Truckee’s premiere tire shop Stone’s Country Tire & Automotive, who provided us the following tires for the warmer days ahead:
- HERCULES ROADTOUR® 855 SPE
- FALKEN ZIEX ZE-512
- MICHELIN® ENERGY™ SAVER A/S
- BFGOODRICH® ADVANTAGE™ CONTROL™
- PIRELLI CINTURATO P7™
All-season tires are those made to perform in the rain and bare pavement year-round while offering better traction than studded tires, which are known to damage roads and slide on dry cement.
