If you are hosting friends or family this weekend, this is the easiest way to prevent the most common summer problems. Set a timer for 30 minutes, walk your property once, and take a few photos of anything that looks questionable.
This is not about perfection. It is about safety, comfort, and catching issues before someone trips, a railing wobbles, or a stair tread feels soft.
Step 1, decks and railings (10 minutes)
Check these first:
- Railings, push gently and see if anything moves
- Stairs, walk them slowly and notice any flex or wobble
- Deck boards, look for lifted boards, popped fasteners, or soft spots
If you find movement, Repairs should come before staining or cosmetic work.
Step 2, walkways and entry points (10 minutes)
Look for:
- Uneven steps or loose pavers
- Trip hazards near the front door and garage
- Slippery pine needles on shaded paths
A quick sweep and a small fix can prevent a lot of hassle.
Step 3, lighting and visibility (5 minutes)
Make sure:
- Entry lights work
- Path lights are not blocked by overgrowth
- Motion lights are set where you actually need them
Step 4, quick yard scan (5 minutes)
Look for:
- Low branches near driveways and parking areas
- Debris piles near decks or play areas
- Anything that could be a surprise hazard for kids or dogs
