If you’ve been wondering why Hanukkah seems to be starting a bit later than usual this year, you’re not alone! The answer lies in the fascinating world of the Hebrew calendar, which is a lunisolar system. This means it takes into account both the moon’s phases and the solar year, making it a bit different from the Gregorian calendar most of us use.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which has fixed dates for holidays, the Hebrew calendar’s months are based on the moon’s cycles, with each month beginning on the new moon. Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, the dates of Jewish holidays like Hanukkah shift each year when compared to the Gregorian calendar.

This year, Hanukkah starts later than usual, but don’t worry—it’s not because of anything mystical or out of the ordinary. It’s simply a quirk of the calendar! The holiday typically falls between late November and late December, so its start date can vary widely. This shift is why the Hebrew calendar sometimes feels like it’s playing a game of catch-up with the solar calendar, but it’s also part of what makes the celebration feel fresh and exciting each time.

So, whether Hanukkah arrives early or late, one thing’s for sure: the spirit of the Festival of Lights is always right on time!

Hanukkah Sameach, Happy Hanukkah, to all of our friends and neighbors celebrating this season.
