“For me, STIHL Chainsaws are the industry standard and the construction of each saw is superior to any other equipment I have used. From their comfortable, durability, and ease of maintainance. These saws are the most universal and reliable of all our services beyond defensible space.”
– Todd Schneider, Defensible Space Manager

Since the creation of the forest reserves in 1891, our national forest system has grown to include 191 million acres and gone through a collection of management decisions based on. The most recent push has been a combination of sustainable forestry and the development of wildfire mitigation practices, or Defensible Space. Yet, throughout this all, one tool has remained constant in managing our national forests since its invention.
The necessity for defensible space and forestry management has never been more prominent. Efficient and reliable defensible space is dependent on having the right tools for the job. The tool that is most synonymous with forestry management is without a doubt the chainsaw. Numerous brands of chainsaws are available, yet Elements and countless other contractors have depended on one brand, STIHL Chainsaws, to make sure the job gets done.

The first chainsaw was a hand-crank chain with teeth invented in 1780 by doctors to make removing pelvic bone easier during childbirth. The hand-crank saw was eventually retired from the hospital and was later adopted by the timber industry.
Inspired by those early hand-powered models, Andreas Stihl developed his first mechanical, handheld chainsaw in 1926. The earliest models weighed 106 lbs and required two people to operate them. From there, the ‘A. Stihl Maschinenfabrik’ (STIHL) company slowly grew to become the first European saw manufacturer to export chainsaws to the United States in 1931.

In 1950 the first one-person chainsaw came to market. While it was still heavier than what we use today, it completely revolutionized the professions of lumberjacks, Forest Management crews, and our Defensible Space team.
Today, Elements’ Defensible Space, Forestry, and Tree Service teams choose STIHL chainsaws as our primary selection due to their durable nature and reliability in the field. Todd Schneider, Elements’ Defensible Space Manager, says: ‘Stihl is the industry standard, and its construction is superior to any other equipment on the market.’ Less maintenance and downtime due to mechanics issues means Elements’ crews can more efficiently and reliably get through their work.
