Over the years we have looked at dozens of tractors from different manufacturers. We’ve learned that what may work in lower snow areas in Truckee often doesn’t work in Tahoe Donner’s demanding environment.

We’ve found that a combination of small, high horsepower tractors and larger tractors for the more demanding high elevation areas works best for Tahoe Donner’s diverse conditions.

Meet The tractors That Work Best In Tahoe Donner

Holder Tractors

  • Our ‘Old Faithful’ and the most abundant tractor in our fleet.
  • Years ago we were looking for a tractor to get away from the huge front-end loaders that did not leave as good of a product and had a significantly higher risk of damaging driveways.
  • We quickly discovered that these small, high horsepower tractors not only had the size and maneuverability to clear under decks, low-hanging branches, and around cars and into parking pads but they also had the power necessary to take on heavy TD snow loads.

Maclean Tractors

  • When our fleet of Holders began to age and parts became tougher to get ahold of, and cleaner emission tractors became a priority, we set our sights on discovering the small-size tractor of the future.
  • After some work, we landed on our Maclean tractors.
  • These tractors deliver everything our Holders do and more.
  • They are more reliable, clean burning, and handle steep terrain and heavy snow loads well.
  • We will be adding more and more of these tractors to our fleet in the future.

New Holland Tractors

  • Elements decided to add New Holland tractors to the fleet back in 2005.
  • These larger, more powerful tractors are reserved for our most experienced operators and are preferably used in the highest elevation areas in TD where snow loads are the heaviest.
  • Their large size helps clear driveways faster and blow snow further but it does come with some downsides, as they can not fit into some of the smaller spaces that Holders and MacLeans fit into and their weight increases the risk of damage to the driveway.
  • In 2014 New Holland stopped making this tractor and parts are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Looking Forward

  • We are in the process of looking for a replacement for our New Holland tractors much like we have found MacLean to replace Holder.
  • We will update you when a decision is made, but we hope to find something with power similar to the New Holland, but a bit smaller in size with increased mobility.
