Tired of seeing dog poop and/or poop bags on the street and want to help reduce it? Don’t mind having a little “eau de poo poo” smell in your bear box? If the answer to both is yes, then you’re ready to join the “Dog Waste Ok” program!
Our dogs are not capable of cleaning up after themselves. Whether it is due to their lack of opposable thumbs, their general superiority complex that we are no more than a friendly servant, or maybe they are still refusing to pay the Poop Fairy toll. We want to remind you that we need to work together to keep our streets and waterways from getting shitty.
To join this voluntary program come to Elements Mountain Company or head to your closest Ace Mountain Hardware, pick up a free Dog Waste Ok magnet (pictured below), and place it on your bear box. Doing so gives dog owner/walkers permission to deposit properly sealed dog waste bags into your bear box. If you no longer want to participate then simply remove the magnet!

Do you want to be a responsible dog owner/walker?
Look for a Dog Waste Ok magnet on a bear box and do the following:
- Pick up the dog’s poop in a plastic bag (do this regardless of anything else)
- Tie the bag tightly closed so it cannot spill out
- Unlatch and open up the bear box
- Place the bag inside a garbage can – PLEASE DO NOT leave it on the floor – OR – in front of the bear box
- Close the bear box and relatch it
- Double check that the bear box is secure
As a reminder Do Not put dog waste or dog poop bags into green or blue bins as that contaminates the bin contents and can result in TTSD not picking up your neighbor’s bin.
If you rent and allow dogs, please let the renters know about the program, the Town flyer about the hazards of leaving dog waste and about not using the green/blue cans (see next). Maybe even provide them with free poop bags. Together we can all help reduce dog waste and poop bags left in the neighborhood.
The Town of Truckee has over 3,000 licensed dogs, and an estimated 1,500 unlicensed dogs and visiting dogs. The USDA indicates an average dog can produce 274 pounds of waste a year. For Truckee, that is well over 800,000 pounds of dog waste a year. Pet waste is essentially raw sewage, and carries harmful bacteria which can affect the health of not only aquatic wildlife, but ourselves and our children.
Why Isn’t Dog Waste Natural?
The local dog population density is very high compared to large mammals in a natural forest Approximate Large Mammal Population Densities (animals per square mile):
Bears – 1 to 2.5
Fox – 4
Coyotes – 1 to 5
Truckee Dogs – 90 to 140
Dogs are often walked on trails, lakes and along streams where owners enjoy walking, which tends to concentrate waste in these areas. Thank you in advance for helping keep our community clean!
