Seana Doherty and Isaac Landman work in the Town of Truckee’s Housing Department and are charged with finding solutions to grow affordable housing options for our local workforce. According to the 2020 census Truckee has a population of 16,729. There are also over 14,000 total housing units within Truckee. Unfortunately, 52% of these homes are either second homes that sit vacant for much of the year.

Enter the work that Seana and Isaac are doing by being proactive in battling this issue with Truckee’s workforce housing needs. The two year-old Housing Department has found success by focusing on four main components to ensure success which are: funding, partnerships with other local agencies, policy reform within the town, and new programs from that funding. Much of the aforementioned funding will be generated by the passing of Measure K, which will generate approximately $700,000 annually and equates to an estimated $14M over 20 years and be allocated to the following programs:

The Housing Department’s self-proclaimed aggressive approach is not only succeeding in making it easier for our workforce to live within the community, but its success has caught the attention of other mountain communities Wyoming, Utah, Montana and Colorado.

Lastly, ask your boss or co-workers if they know of someone who has a room or house available to rent. This is a tight knit community with people who like to know that their tenant has gainful employment and is contributing to the local economy. So don’t be shy and ask you boss!

TENANTS BE WARNED: If it seems too good to be true. IT IS! Please do not send anyone money nor commit to any housing until you have had an actual conversation with them.
